Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?
I drink a lot of coffee and can see my teeth getting darker year after year.
My teeth look yellow in photos, so I hold back my smile.
I have tried whitening strips and toothpastes – no result, and my teeth hurt with cold.
I want a reliable result before my wedding, not last-minute experiments.
I am planning a smile makeover and I know it starts with the colour of my teeth.
If at least one of these sounds like you, in-office whitening can lighten your teeth by several to over a dozen shades on the VITA scale. Whether it will work for you too, the dentist checks at a consultation – before you spend money on the treatment.
How can we help?
The five worries we hear most often before whitening, and honest answers to each of them.
“I am afraid whitening will ruin my enamel.”
If this worry is holding you back: treatment carried out in the practice, after an eligibility check and with the gums protected, does not strip or wear away enamel – the gel lightens the pigments inside the tissue. It is home experiments with charcoal and baking soda that act like sandpaper. We cover this in more detail in the section on safety.
“I have heard teeth are sensitive to cold after the treatment.”
If you are worried about sensitivity: temporary sensitivity to cold in the first few days is possible and normal – for some patients, toothpaste for sensitive teeth used for 2–3 days after the treatment helps. It passes; protecting the gums and controlling the gel concentration limit discomfort from the outset.
“Will it even work for me?”
If you have discolouration from antibiotics, a non-vital tooth after root canal treatment, or visible crowns and fillings: this is exactly what we check at the consultation. Not all discolouration responds in the same way, and restorations will not whiten – we tell you this before the treatment, not after, so you know what result to expect.
“I do not want teeth that glow like light bulbs.”
If you are worried about an artificial look: the starting point is your own shade measured on the VITA scale, and the lightening is gradual and individual – everyone ends up with a slightly different shade. With the tray method you also have full control over the pace: you stop the course when you are happy with the colour.
“Why pay 1500 PLN when strips cost 40 PLN?”
If the pharmacy is tempting: strips and toothpastes work at concentrations too low to produce a lasting change – which is why so many people come to us after trying them, disappointed. In the practice you get a concentration available only under a dentist’s supervision, protection for your gums, and an eligibility check that rules out treatment where it would make no sense.

You will find a full description of each stage further down the page. Here is the shortest version of what to expect.
Lamp whitening vs tray whitening – a comparison
Both methods are effective and carried out under a dentist’s supervision; they differ in pace, place and control over the shade. We make the final choice together at the consultation.
Who will carry out my procedure?
The eligibility check and whitening are carried out by Adrian Kiepuszewski, a dentist with more than 16 years of experience, who approaches aesthetics in this order: healthy teeth and gums first, colour second. At the consultation you will hear whether whitening makes sense for you and what result you can realistically expect – even when the honest answer is that a different treatment would be better.
Professional cleaning before whitening is carried out by our hygienist, Daria Zazulińskaya, and everything takes place in one place, under one plan. You can read more about his experience on the About Dr Adrian Kiepuszewski page.

Very professional and friendly. A visit to the dentist can be a pleasant experience after all. The aligners are comfortable and hygienic, and week by week I can see my teeth straightening. I recommend it.
Translated from PolishI had the pleasure of being treated by Dr Kiepuszewski at Flow Dental Studio, and I can honestly say he is an exceptional dentist. Wisdom tooth extraction, which so many patients dread, took place in a comfortable atmosphere. Dr Adrian is not only extremely competent but also has a wonderful approach to patients, full of understanding and care. I also decided on aligner treatment. The doctor's precise work and professionalism mean the visits run smoothly and in a pleasant atmosphere. My smile looks better and better, and I know it was the best decision. I recommend him to anyone who dreams of straight teeth without pain or discomfort! The Flow Dental Studio practice itself also deserves a special mention. Modern equipment, a beautiful interior, a pleasant atmosphere and kind, courteous staff make patients feel looked after, and the visit becomes a much more pleasant experience. It is a place that cares not only about healthy teeth but also about the patient's wellbeing.
Translated from PolishFlow Dental Studio is a place where professionalism goes hand in hand with empathy and care for the patient. I had professional teeth cleaning and fillings there, and I am very impressed by the precision and gentleness of the treatment. Dr Julia and Daria explain everything thoroughly, and the atmosphere at the practice is calm and friendly. It is definitely a practice you can trust completely, which is why I will be back whenever the opportunity arises :)
Translated from PolishBeautiful practice, professional staff, and the doctor is the GOAT. I didn't even notice when it was over – the nasty wisdom tooth is gone. Highly recommended.
Translated from PolishIt is rare to find places where professionalism goes hand in hand with genuine empathy — but Flow Dental Studio is exactly that kind of place. I had the pleasure (yes, it really can be called that!) of being in Dr Adrian's care for a wisdom tooth extraction I had been dreading for a long time because of severe hypersensitivity. What sets Dr Adrian apart is not only his exceptional skill and precision, but above all his extraordinary respect for the patient's boundaries and feelings. Every gesture and every word – full of calm, understanding and attentiveness – made me feel cared for at every stage of the procedure. A procedure that had filled me with fear turned out to be an almost... soothing experience. No pain, no tension, and great attention to my mental and physical comfort. This is not just dentistry at the highest level — it is the art of creating a safe space in a place usually associated with stress. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Dr Adrian and the whole Flow Dental Studio team for making it possible to come to you anxious — and leave grateful and smiling.
Translated from PolishI recommend Dr Adrian. A very professional approach to patients.

Does teeth whitening hurt?
Can yellow teeth be whitened?
What whitens teeth the most?
Is it worth having your teeth whitened at the dentist?
How do we lighten teeth darkened by coffee, tea and time?
With a gel at a concentration available only under a dentist’s supervision, which lightens the pigments built up in the tooth tissue – rather than scrubbing them off the surface, as toothpastes or charcoal do. You have two options: lamp whitening in the practice, with results after a single visit of about an hour, or custom trays with gel that you use at home.
Before anything starts, the dentist checks whether whitening is right for you at all: they examine your teeth and gums, rule out contraindications and assess your starting shade on the VITA scale. That way you know what result to expect before you pay for the treatment.
Teeth whitening in Gdynia at a glance
We carry out professional teeth whitening at our practice in Gdynia, under a dentist’s supervision.

A consultation and professional teeth cleaning (scaling, air polishing) are required before whitening.
Lamp whitening costs 1500 PLN, tray whitening 1200 PLN; professional cleaning 450 PLN.
The result usually lasts from a year to about three years, depending on diet and hygiene.
After the treatment you follow a white diet and avoid staining foods and drinks.
Why do teeth change colour?
The colour of teeth changes with age and with lifestyle – teeth become darker or discolouration appears. The causes are divided into external and internal.
Coffee, tea, red wine and berries – external pigments that settle on the enamel.
Smoking and poor oral hygiene also discolour teeth.
Internal causes – with age and for genetic reasons, teeth naturally darken.
Certain medicines taken in childhood, or an injury and the death of the pulp, cause deep discolouration.
Whitening works on the pigments in the natural tooth tissue – including those from drinks such as red wine. The substances in the gel lighten them, so your smile becomes brighter, and white teeth improve the look of your smile. Other causes – such as discoloured dental restorations – call for a different approach.
What does professional teeth whitening involve?
Professional teeth whitening is a chemical treatment, supervised by a dentist, that safely lightens the pigments built up in the tooth tissue. To explain how teeth whitening works: the active substance (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) penetrates the enamel into the dentine and, through oxidation, breaks pigment molecules down into lighter ones. A whitening product is applied to the teeth, and the dentist supervises the whole process.
The advantage of the practice over pharmacy products lies in the proven concentration of the product and in protecting the gums. A dentist’s supervision reduces the risk of irritation and sensitivity. As a result, professional whitening delivers a visible result without harming your oral health. Whitening is a cosmetic dentistry treatment, not oral surgery.
Why have your teeth whitened at a dental practice?
The practice vs pharmacy products
Teeth whitening at a dental practice is safer and more effective than home methods from the pharmacy, because it is done after an eligibility check and under supervision. The dentist rules out contraindications, protects the gums and chooses the right method. The products used at a dental practice have proven, certified formulations.
Home methods without a consultation are best avoided – products of unknown origin may have an unknown concentration or an acidic pH and can damage the enamel. Safe, effective whitening is whitening carried out by a qualified dentist. Treatments carried out under supervision give a predictable result.
Lamp teeth whitening – results in 60 minutes
Lamp teeth whitening is in-office whitening that gives a visible result after just one visit lasting about 60 minutes. Online you will often see the phrase Beyond lamp teeth whitening – a popular name for this method, as is laser teeth whitening, although in practice an LED lamp is used. In this case, laser whitening and lamp whitening are the same LED-light procedure, chosen for quick, visible results.
The process is quick: the dentist protects the gums and lips, applies the whitening gel and activates it with an LED lamp. Modern lamps use cold LED light, which limits heating of the teeth and sensitivity – an advantage of modern technology. It is the option for people who want an immediate result, because the patient leaves the practice with a brighter smile straight away.
Tray teeth whitening – the at-home tray method
Tray whitening is an at-home method – the patient carries out the course on their own, at home, under a dentist’s supervision. It gives you full control over how much your teeth are lightened and lets you fit the course around your daily routine. Tray teeth whitening lightens teeth gradually over about 10–14 days.
A visit at which the dentist takes digital impressions with a scanner – these are used to make custom trays for your dental arches.
Collecting your fitted trays, together with a set of whitening gel syringes and instructions.
Applying the gel yourself and wearing the trays for a few hours a day or overnight, as advised by the dentist.
Tray teeth whitening in the comfort of your home is a convenient, gentler way of lightening teeth for people who prefer to control the result.
What does the teeth whitening process involve, step by step?
Teeth whitening at Flow Dental Studio in Gdynia has four stages: a consultation, professional cleaning, the treatment itself and aftercare advice. This sequence ensures safety and an even result.
Consultation and eligibility check. Teeth whitening begins with a consultation at which the dentist examines your teeth and gums and rules out contraindications to whitening, such as active decay, leaking fillings or inflammation. They also assess your starting shade on the VITA scale and choose the right method together with you. We tailor the plan to each patient’s individual needs.
Professional teeth cleaning. Professional cleaning – scaling and air polishing – is a compulsory stage before whitening. Removing tartar and stains lets the gel work evenly across all of the enamel. It is best done a few days before whitening, so that the gums have time to recover. Regular hygiene also helps you maintain the result afterwards.
Whitening treatment or tray instructions. With the in-office method, the patient spends about an hour in the chair – the dentist protects the gums and applies the whitening gel several times, exposing the teeth to an LED lamp. With the tray method, the patient receives custom trays and gels along with detailed instructions on how to use them at home.
Aftercare and the white diet. After the treatment the patient receives aftercare advice, and following it locks in the result and limits temporary tooth sensitivity. Sticking to a white diet in the first few days is key. For some patients, using toothpaste for sensitive teeth for 2–3 days after whitening helps.
Is teeth whitening right for you?
Whitening is worth considering when the colour of your teeth stops you smiling freely day to day. The final eligibility check is carried out by the dentist at a consultation.
- Your teeth have darkened from coffee, tea or red wine.
- Your smile has lost its brightness with age.
- You want a brighter smile before an important event.
- After years, you want to refresh the colour of your teeth with a short treatment.
- You want safe whitening under a dentist’s supervision.

Book a consultationHow long do whitening results last?
The results of teeth whitening are usually satisfying – in-office treatment can lighten a smile by as much as several to over a dozen shades on the VITA scale. The result is individual and depends on your starting shade and tooth structure. For many people the goal is a snow-white smile, although the result is individual and everyone ends up with a slightly different shade.
How long the result lasts depends on your lifestyle. Typically you can enjoy a brighter smile for a year to about three years. How long the results last for a given patient is affected by:
Diet – drinking coffee, tea and red wine often brings the colour back sooner.
Smoking noticeably shortens how long the result lasts.
Regular hygiene and professional cleaning help keep teeth white for longer.
The colour can be refreshed with short top-up treatments, for example with the tray method. That way, your bright smile lasts longer.
White diet and oral hygiene after whitening
After whitening, the enamel is temporarily more susceptible to pigments, which is why a white diet and avoiding staining foods and drinks apply for 7–14 days. Good oral hygiene also helps protect the result.
Dairy (plain yoghurt, cottage cheese, milk), poultry and white fish, white rice and white bread, pale vegetables (cauliflower, potatoes) and bananas.
Coffee, tea, red wine, juices, cola, beetroot, tomatoes, berries, as well as soy sauce, ketchup, turmeric and curry.
Avoiding staining foods and drinks in the first few days genuinely helps lock in the colour.
Is whitening safe, and does it damage enamel?
Professional whitening under a dentist’s supervision does not damage enamel – modern products have certified formulations, and they work by oxidising pigments in the dentine without affecting the structure of the hard tissues. The risk of enamel damage arises rather with home methods using products of unknown origin, with an unknown concentration or an acidic pH. Under a dentist’s supervision, in-office teeth whitening remains safe for the enamel and gums.
Contraindications to teeth whitening
Professional whitening is safe for a healthy patient after an eligibility check, but it has absolute contraindications. These include:
- pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- age under 18 (enamel not fully developed),
- allergy to hydrogen peroxide or ingredients of the product,
- active tooth decay and leaking fillings,
- acute inflammation of the gums and periodontium.
Some of these are temporary – once treated, you can safely return to your whitening plan.
Can a non-vital tooth be whitened after root canal treatment?
Yes, whitening a non-vital tooth is possible, but it needs a different technique from the one used on vital teeth. Standard lamp or tray whitening will not work, because the source of the discolouration is inside the tooth, after root canal treatment. Discolouration of a non-vital tooth comes from the breakdown of pulp tissue or from materials inside the tooth.
In this case, internal whitening (“walking bleach”) is used. The treatment involves placing a whitening product inside the crown, after sealing off the root canal filling, and replacing it every few days until the colour matches the neighbouring teeth. It is a method for a single, non-vital tooth.
Does whitening work on crowns, veneers and fillings?
No – whitening products only work on natural tooth tissue. Dental restoration materials do not change colour under the gel.
Enamel and dentine respond to whitening gel – this is what the product acts on and what becomes lighter.
Composite and porcelain do not change colour. After your natural teeth have been whitened, visible fillings, crowns or veneers may stand out in colour.
In that case, to achieve a uniform colour, replacing the fillings or new restorations matched to the lighter shade may be considered. The order – whitening first, then the restorations – is decided by the dentist at the consultation.
